JAKARTA, 4 November 2016 – Continuing ASEAN’s spirit of embracing diversity, promoting cultural richness and caring for others, the ASEAN Women’s Circle (AWC) ran a bazaar at the ASEAN Secretariat on 2-3 November in order to raise fund for charity.
“The bazaar serves as an ideal showcase of unique and diverse products from different ASEAN Member States and different parts of Indonesia. It is also a platform to raise the profile of every country’s rich culture and to promote the diverse and high quality local-made products,” said AWC President, Mrs. Ugi Pramono.
The bazaar is AWC’s annual fund-raising event. All proceeds collected will be earmarked for future AWC projects and activities. The money AWC raised from last year’s bazaar allowed underprivileged children to attend school and made healthcare available for the poor in remote areas of Indonesia. It was also used to support those affected by an earthquake in Myanmar.
“AWC’s act of kindness to care for the well-being of others upholds the core values that are deeply rooted in the culture of the peoples of ASEAN. It illustrates the spirit of the ASEAN Community that we all embrace, a community that is people-oriented and people-centred,” said AKP Mochtan, Deputy Secretary-General of Community and Corporate Affairs of ASEAN.
Items such as handicrafts, batiks, fashion accessories, carpets, home accessories, kids’ wears and toys, apparel for men and women, and different cuisines from ASEAN Member States, its dialogue partners, and over 70 vendors and exhibitors were sold during the bazaar.
ASEAN Women’s Circle is a social organisation consisting of women from ten ASEAN Member States living in Jakarta, including wives of ASEAN Ambassadors from ten ASEAN Member States. Established on 8 August 1975, the AWC is committed to strengthening solidarity and promoting cooperation among its members as well as to acquainting them and the general public with the aims and objectives of ASEAN through various cultural and social activities, charity events, and other social works.
